Ms. Nelsen’s Life Skills class had a busy week getting life-ready and spending time with some new people who they knew of, but never officially met until now! In their group with Ms. Pleszewski and Ms. Nelsen, two weeks ago, they wrote formal letters to two people who have been “behind the scenes” fans of theirs, Lieutenant Jeff Ortolano of the Dunkirk Police Department, and Makala Nelsen, who works for Bridgewater State University. They asked these two amazing individuals to come speak to their class about communication. Lt. Jeff Ortolano brought along Chief Chris Witkowski and the both of them surprised the class on Wednesday with a visit! The Chief and Lieutenant spoke about being in law enforcement, the importance of community, how they communicate among their department and with their community, and even enjoyed some pizza with the students! The students ended the time getting some fun prizes as well. Makala Nelsen zoomed with the students from her office in Massachusetts and spoke about her career working as a Coordinator for Fraternity and Sorority Life for Bridgewater State University. She discussed what it is like in higher education, working with students who are in college, how she learned to interact with others who speak different languages or have different cultures, and she even got to hear about how amazing her mom is! The students will continue to work on written communication next week by personally writing thank you cards and mailing them to the speakers. They are having a blast learning skills for their future after The Valley!

Cassadaga Valley 7th Grade Capstone Project 📱 Under the guidance of Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Tammy Rice, our incredible 7th-grade students have completed a powerful Capstone Project focused on cell phone use in schools—a topic they explored with dedication and civic purpose. Over the past few months, these students have engaged in in-depth research, reading, and data analysis, including the creation and distribution of surveys within the school community. Their work reflects key steps on the path toward Civic Readiness as outlined by New York State. These young civic leaders didn’t stop at research—they stepped up as speakers and presenters at the May 21st Board of Education meeting, where they shared their findings and solutions with district leaders and guests. 👏 We are proud of their leadership, teamwork, and commitment to making their voices heard on issues that matter! #CivicReadiness #StudentVoices #FutureLeaders #CapstoneProject #CassadagaValley

📚✨ Powerful Lessons in History and Humanity ✨🎭 This month, students from Cassadaga Valley’s 8th Grade, 9th Grade Honors, and Human Rights classes had the profound opportunity to experience a moving one-person play, "Through the Eyes of a Friend", which tells the story of Anne Frank through the eyes of a fictional friend. Presented as part of our ongoing Holocaust education efforts, this emotional and thought-provoking performance gave students a deeper understanding of the impact of intolerance, hate, and the strength of the human spirit. Special thanks to the Robert H. Jackson Center for hosting this unforgettable event and for continuing to support meaningful civic and human rights education in our region. #CassadagaValley #HolocaustEducation #AnneFrank #ThroughTheEyesOfAFriend #RobertHJacksonCenter #HumanRights #NeverForget
