Part of the New York State Social Studies standard includes teaching our students about personal finance, goals, and how do utilize an effective budget. Cassadaga graduate Nick Stern, who works for M & T Bank Relations, came into Mrs. Richir's senior Economics class to demonstrate more about establishing credit, how to read credit reports, understanding loans and interest as well as answering the several questions students had. The students wanted Mr. Stern to return to discuss more about fraud and fraud protection. We are looking forward to having him back in January! #ValleyProud

Mrs. Nocero from the Guidance Office arranged for a West Point Cadet to come and speak to some of Mrs. Richir's Social Studies classes. Jacob Sears, from Falconer, shared many aspects of academics, service and character as well as life at West Point. Cadet Sears also shared the importance of its history. The Continental Army first occupied West Point in 1778. The strategic location on the Hudson River was a key defensive position for the Americans. General George Washington established his headquarters at West Point in 1779 and considered it the most important strategic location in America.

As part of our December Reflection, here's what Mrs. Bennink shared about some really great real-world opportunities that are happening in Parenting/Child Psychology and JCC Education. The first two photos are a couple of the Parenting/Child Psychology students (Naomi Johnson and Addison Helwig) teaching patterns to the PreK students in Ms. Emmott's class. The third picture is Isabella Jaquith who is doing her 40 hour internship in Mrs. Dyer's PreK class teaching shapes. The third and fourth photos are Mattea Hilliker and Addisyn Grissom learning how to care for an infant in the Parenting/Child Psychology class. Each student takes the Real Care Baby home to simulate the real life experience of taking care of an infant. These students also use the Empathy Belly simulator that allows them to understand the signs/symptoms of pregnancy. The last photo is of the JCC Education class with Mrs. Kelly learning about classroom management and what it looks like in her classroom. They went to Mrs. Dague's and Mr. Cusimano's classrooms as well. We're #ValleyProud about all of these Life-Ready activities that are so important to the learning, growth and development of our students! We appreciate Mrs. Bennink taking the lead to ensure these great things happen in our school!

December is for reflection! We asked our staff to share ways they're building life-ready, real-world relevant opportunities for our students, how they're creating literacy-focused environments, and how they're making They Valley proud! Throughout the month of December, we'll be sharing what the staff has to share with us. Mrs. Dague is our 6th grade science and math AIS teacher and here's what she had to share: 1. Her middle school science club found and collected native leaves and plants from the trails on campus. After identifying the leaves and plants, students were able to create their own unique nature print t-shirts and socks. Students painted bleach gel on their leaves or plants and used them as stamps to create imprints of the plants pattern on their t-shirts or socks. Students were instructed on bleach safety, and learned how the strong chemical can cause a chemical reaction. In conclusion, they learned that bleach caused the color change in their shirts. Check out these fun shirts!! 2. One attempt Mrs. Dague has made in implementing literacy-based activities is in the form of review games before quizzes or tests. She has created vocabulary bingo charts based on the key terms within lessons. The students are given bingo boards with the vocabulary terms in the boxes, and are read the definitions. This game has made reviewing for quizzes or tests more enjoyable for the students and Mrs. Dague! She's also looking forward to attending one of the Reading-to-Learn informational meetings in December. 3. To spread the message of ownership and responsibility, Mrs. Dague has allotted time in their schedule for locker and binder cleaning. During this time students organize and sort through their materials. At this age many students still require guidance on how to keep a neat and tidy area and/or binder. While students use their study skills time for many different tasks based on their personal goals, they also have the responsibility to maintain a neat environment. Thank you, Mrs. Dague, for sharing your reflections on the start of the school year and how it pertains to building life-readiness, creating a literacy-focused environment and how you and your students ROAR throughout The Valley!

The Business Math classes at Cassadaga recently welcomed Mike Myers, the Sales Consultant of Toyota of Erie, PA. He is also the father of three students here at CVCS, Hailey, Gabe and Austin. He taught the students the difference between buying and leasing a car. We learned about the pros and cons of buying old cars versus new cars. We discussed certified and non-certified vehicles and talked a lot about warranties and the process of trading in a used vehicle. We are so thankful he took the time out of his busy week to teach us so much!
