Merry TubaChristmas! 8th grade tuba student, Ben Petry, and Mrs. Zenns participated in the 50th anniversary of TubaChristmas by rehearsing and playing a concert of Christmas Carols arranged for low brass instruments at Eastern Hills Mall in Williamsville. Ben & Mrs. Zenns decorated their instruments with lights and garland (and an elf!) and had a wonderful time playing with the other 80 low brass players! Legendary tubist, Harvey Phillips, began TubaChristmas in 1982 as a music concert held in cities worldwide that celebrates those who play, teach, and compose music for instruments in the tuba family.

This week we are honoring Matthew Helwig! Matthew has earned a trip to the 2023 NYSSMA Conference to sing tenor in the mixed choir. The choir is made up of 11th and 12th graders from around New York State, including New York City, Long Island and everywhere in between. Students audition in the spring of their 10th grade or 11th grade year for this event. He will be participating in four days of rehearsals with a guest conductor, culminating in a concert on Sunday at the Riverside Convention Center in Rochester. This concert is recorded and used by music companies to sell their arrangements of music.
Matthew had a perfect score of a 100 on a level 6 solo in April, and was recommended by his adjudicator at the highest of three levels of musicianship in order to be selected. He has a history of excellent NYSSMA scores, scoring 99 on level 6 solos 2 consecutive times. He has also performed NYSSMA solos on trumpet.
We are extremely proud of Matthew for showing the hard work and dedication to achieve this great honor! He is, at the very least, the only student in the past 40 years from Cassadaga Valley who has earned this honor. It may be longer than that!
Congratulations, Matthew. We’re all proud of you and how you’ve represented The Valley!

Congrats to all of our 1st quarter Honor and Merit Roll students!
