Operation Safe Stop! - Youngest Students at Risk
The NY State Education Department, Department of Pupil Transportation, states that the youngest students are most at risk. Children ages 4 to 8 (grades K-3) are most susceptible to a school bus fatality. These children, though they represent less than 35% of the student population, were involved in 69% of the fatalities (79 out of 114).
Factors that likely contribute to these statistics:
~The smaller stature of younger children makes them more difficult for bus drivers and motorists to see.
~These younger students are unable to see over or around objects such as parked cars or bushes.
Operation Safe Stop! - this week focuses on the importance of stopping for school buses. When you see a bus with its red lights flashing and the stop sign extended, that means children are getting on or off. No matter which direction you’re coming from, always stop! Let’s work together to keep our kids safe!
This Thursday, April 24th, is Operation Safe Stop! Throughout the week we'll be posting safety tips, reminders, and information related to School Bus safety!
Did you know that approximately 23 million children ride the school bus every day? Let’s commit to being vigilant and aware when driving near school buses. Remember: when the red lights flash, it’s time to stop!

Last Friday, our Food Service Department hosted their first Cougars Culinary Contest and it was a huge success! Eight teams consisted of three students and one CVCS faculty or staff member. Last week each team chose a side dish recipe and submitted their grocery list of needed supplies. On Friday morning, each team scheduled time in the kitchen to create their entry dish. At the end of the day, one student from each team presented to the panel of judges. Judges considered not only taste but appearance, presentation, creativity and originality. While the judges deliberated final scores, everyone was able to taste their competitor's dishes! Fun was had by all!

Students created hygiene kits with items that were received from the Teacher's Desk in Buffalo from the school wide donation recently received. In each kit they included deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste and a toothbrush. The high school Science Club, along with a few FFA members, went on a field trip, Thursday, to the Grape Discovery Center in Westfield . The students learned about the grapevine growth cycle and why our area is so good for grapes. They were instructed on the history behind Welch’s and were treated to free grape juice and grape cake in the center’s tasting room. The group also walked through the exhibits, small museum and out onto the patio to get a firsthand view of the vineyards.

Students attended a powerful and moving program at the Robert H. Jackson Center on Thursday, April 3. After a guided tour of the Center, students stayed for the evening presentation, which told the incredible true story of Kurt and Edith Leuchter — Holocaust survivors, members of the French Resistance, and immigrants who built a new life in America.
Their story was shared by their daughter, Deborah Stueber, as part of the Center’s Generations Speaker Series. Kurt and Edith, now 96 and 97 years old, joined the program via Zoom to answer student questions and reflect on their life experiences.
Mrs. Richir currently offers a Human Rights & Genocide elective at Cassadaga Valley, and this field trip was open to her class, as well as students from Honors 9, Mr. Stimson's Honors 10, and the History Club.
Deborah Leuchter Stueber has dedicated herself to sharing her parents’ story with schools, universities, and organizations across the country. She believes it is the responsibility of her generation — and future generations — to carry on the legacy of Holocaust survivors and ensure their stories are never forgotten.
When Deborah asked her parents what advice they would give to students, Kurt replied, " Make sure when you hear or read something that you don't automatically believe it. Find out the truth."
